Top 10 Causes of Vaginal Bleeding After Intercourse

Bleeding after sex can be rather alarming, and there could be many reasons why a woman would bleed after sex. Though most women bleed after their first time having sex, if bleeding becomes frequent, there may be an underlying issue. Below are the 10 top causes for vaginal bleeding after having sex.

 

1. Cervical dysplasia

Cervical dysplasia refers to the appearance of precancerous changes of cells which make up a woman's cervical lining. This can be rather serious, especially if these cells mutilate into cancer. This condition can be discovered after such things as a pap smear, and can easily cause vaginal bleeding after sex.

 

2. Chlamydia

Chlamydia is an STD which infects many people every year. This STD is often known as "silent" because symptoms may not always appear. Though, if symptoms do appear, they may come in the form of burning during urination, fever, bleeding after intercourse, a foul discharge and more. This can be a very serious condition, and should immediately be treated. This condition can easily cause bleeding after sexual intercourse, as well as other nasty symptoms.

 

3. Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is an STD which affects hundreds of thousands of people per year, most of them being sexually active teenagers. This disease comes with many symptoms such as burning during urination, bleeding after sex, discolored discharge, swelling of the vulva, pelvic pain and more.

 

4. Vaginitis

Vaginitis is a disorder that is marked by inflammation of the vagina. There are many types of vaginitis, such as a yeast infection and so on. This disorder can be rather painful and unpleasant. It is another disorder which can easily cause bleeding after intercourse along with other symptoms such as vaginal discharge, itching, burning and more.

 

5. Cervical polyps

Cervical polyps are smooth, long, finger shaped red bumps which can appear in the cervical passage between the vagina and the uterus. There are many causes for these, including infections and long term inflammation. These polyps can easily cause bleeding after intercourse along with many other negative side effects.

 

6. Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is another STD which is relatively silent. Though when symptoms do occur, usually between 4 to 44 days after initial contact, they can cause vaginal bleeding after sex, painful urination, a frothy discolored discharge with foul odor and more. This disease should be treated upon discovery.

 

7. Vaginal yeast infection

Most women will experience a vaginal yeast infection at least once within their lifetimes. Although this infection is easily treatable, it can cause many negative symptoms including vaginal bleeding after sex. More common symptoms include burning of the vagina, itching, discharge, vaginal dryness and more. Painful sex may also be common when suffering from a vaginal yeast infection.

 

8. Endometritis or adenomyosis

Both of these disorders are characterized by a growth of cells usually on the back wall of the uterus, when they should be elsewhere. These disorders can often disrupt regular menstruation, but they can also cause bleeding after sex, which as been seen in some cases. These disorders can be rather painful, and sometimes require surgery to be cured.

 

9. Uterine polyps

Uterine polyps are growths that are attached to the inner wall of the uterus and extend into the uterine cavity. These polyps are normally benign, though some can be cancerous or can develop into cancer. These polyps have been known to cause many issues such as pain and even vaginal bleeding after intercourse as well. They should always be monitored to make sure that they do not form into cancer, or aren't cancerous to begin with.

 

10. Fibroid tumors

Fibroid tumors are masses, or tumors, which grow upon the uterus. Though they may sound malicious, they often are not. Many women often experience little to no symptoms with this issue, though when symptoms do present themselves it is often in the form of vaginal bleeding after intercourse, and prolonged or heavier periods than normal. Experts suggest that black women are more likely to suffer from these, and that many women between the ages of 40-55 are also more likely to get them. Though, experts also state that there is little to worry about with these tumors usually.
